Toshiba Regza 55WX800U Review

Over the last few years, Toshiba's LCD television sets have performed very well in testing, and the REGZA 55WX800U is no exception. Like some of its competitors, the REGZA attempts to address some of the problems inherent in LCD TVs. Its viewing angle and black levels are more than adequate, and there is little to no blur with fast motion. Here, we'll share what we found when we took a closer look at the REGZA 55WX800U.

55WX800U

Benefits

  • Great image quality. The REGZA 55WX800U, like we mentioned, has deep rich blacks and great brightness and contrast. Colors are sharp, warm and vibrant, and details are very clear, using every bit of the 720p resolution to make a great picture.
  • The viewing angle is very wide. With some LCD TVs, the picture can look dim or have inaccurate color if not viewed from a front/center position. With the REGZA 55WX800U there was less change in contrast and color when looked at from a side view.
  • Better motion handling. Toshiba addressed another issue common to LCD screens with this set. When we used test patterns designed to point out blurring or streaking of fast motion, this set outperformed many of its competitors.
  • There are a lot of inputs: three HDMI, two HD component, a PC/VGA input and a DVI/PC input. Also, there is a composite input on the side of the set, allowing for easy connection of video game consoles and other gadgets.

Drawbacks

  • The video content shows a slight color shift. When we watched HDTV broadcasts, we noticed a very slight greenish tinge to some flesh tones.
  • There's no PIP (picture in picture) capability, and no cable card.

All in all, the REGZA 55WX800U is a fine choice. In our review, we were quite impressed with its picture quality, which at some times looked almost 3D. Daytime and nighttime contrast and brightness were equally good, and if it performs as well in comprehensive testing, it is likely to be a top pick.
