DVD Review - The Godfather Collection

The Godfather
I remember first seeing the first Godfather movie years ago, then a couple years ago we rented the DVDs to re-watch them and I was blown away (again) by the movies.

However when I saw the Coppola restored versions of the Godfather movies I was more than blown away.  The picture quality is as you would have expected to see it in the theater.  I remember watching it on DVD and it was difficult to watch - but we muddled through it.  The sound was off and the picture was washed out.

But not with this restored version.  You can tell that thousands of hours went in to restoring this masterpiece and I think they got it right.  the remastered Godfather trilogy deserves and should be in any serious movie collectors collection.

Now I'm not going to bore you with a breakdown of the movie - most people have seen it so I'll simply say "brilliant."

However I will tell you that even if you are a fan of the Godfather, and already have a DVD box set from before, or you bought the movies singly at other times, you HAVE to buy this set.  And not just because it's a much more enjoyable movie to watch, but also to see the bonus features.

Over the weekend I was looking for something to do so I stuck in the first of the 2 bonus features discs.  I have to tell you that after watching the movies, then watching the bonus features, I feel like I have to re-watch the movies again.

That's because there are so many little tidbits in the bonus features - things you never knew about the movies - that you begin to appreciate them in a whole new light.

For example, I didn't know that Francis Ford Coppola was always concerned that he would be fired from the movie at any time.  That he had to battle with the movie studio execs to make the movie he thought it was.

I also didn't know that neither Al Pacino or Marlon Brando were also on the chopping block.  But it's true, according to the bonus features.

Maybe other people know this, but I didn't.  Can you imagine a different Godfather than Marlon Brando, or a different Michael Corleone?  Robert Redford was considered for Michael's role.  I couldn't picture him doing the job that Pacino did.

I also better appreciate the movies because of other things I didn't know about them but you'll have to watch the bonus features to learn what they are.

So if you thought you knew the Godfather - I challenge you to buy the discs, watch the bonus features and then tell me that you know the Godfather movies.

My review of the movies and bonus features is A++ - definitely worth owning.
