DVD Review - Beowulf Director's Cut

beowulf.jpgI have to admit to you that I knew very little about this movie before recieving a copy to review. I mean, I knew someone made Beowulf into a movie, and I knew it had some bigger names, such as Angelina Jolie involved, but that was about it.

So I was pleasantly surprised to watch the movie for the first time with very little clouding my judgement.

When I first started watching the movie, I felt there was something not quite right, but I couldn't place it.  It wasn't something about the story which was bugging me, but the movie in general.

I was about 20 minutes into it before I realized that it was entirely computer generated!  I later found out that the movie had also been released as a 3D movie.  Damn I wish I knew that earlier :)

Anyways, the movie is based on the legendary tale of Beowulf versus Grendel.  However, this isn't the same poem you were forced to read in highschool.  Far from it.

I just have to say that the animation is amazing.  They've made a movie worthy of the legend, in my opinion.  But I did have one issue.

As I said above, there was something which bothered me about the movie, but to be honest it's a small thing.  I found that when the characters were very expressive, their faces didn't convey the full emotion the actors were trying to get across.  Of course this is a small thing, and I'd imagine as the motion capture technology improves, so too will "emotion capture."

I can only imagine what the high def version of this movie would look like on a big screen - it must be amazing, because even on my old 32" TV it impressed the hell out of me.

Not only were the effects amazing, but the acting was incredible as well.  I think my favorite acting in the whole movie was Crispin Glover playing Grendel.  When I first saw the movie I thought there was something familiar about the character, but it wasn't until I saw the bonus material that I realized that is was Glover.

Of course the character played by Angelina Jolie is probably the one who gets the most "positive" reviews from the male audience, but to me it was Grendel.

I know there were reviews which are less than impressive when the movie came out, but I have to say if you are looking for a fun movie to watch, that will blow your mind with some truly astounding special effects then Beowulf is it.
